The relationship between Catherine Chandler and Vincent Keller started in 2003, when Vincent saved Catherine, unbeknownst to her.Vincent had kept track of her over the years. However, their friendship and eventual romance began in 2012, in "Pilot".
The cases[]
The cases portrayed in the series until episode-9 has been a metaphor for Catherine or Vincent or both. They serve a backdrop to the developments happening in the lives of the main characters.
The cases seem to either mirror the main characters realizations or highlight their decision making. It also seems to have served as indirect reference to their own relationship between Catherine and Vincent as he helps her with the cases.
For example, while helping solve a case in the episode Worth, Vincent says: "I find that hard to believe. Maybe she doubted him." This worked as a reference to the point where the relationship between Catherine and Vincent was, the doubts.
Obstacles[]
For Vincent, the obstacles standing between him and Catherine at the beginning was his self worth, his past was blurry with some missing memories.He felt he was tainted by the missing memories and his actions as a beast.
His inability to control his transformation was another obstacle in his mind.Added to the fact that Muirfield wanted him dead at any cost, this meant that anyone involved in his life was in danger.
For Catherine,Vincent was the hero who saved her and she later learns he has helped others too.
Her doubts began when she learnt of civilian deaths at Vincent's hands. Catherine has a sense of justice that is rather black and white.In the beginning she believed Vincent was a victim, later she realizes that if people died by his hands, she had to re-evaluate her opinion of him.
Evan Marks the medical examiner seems to be another obstacle in their paths as he is friends with Catherine and would like to take the relationship to the next level. He also happens to be studying Cross Species DNA samples taken from Vanessa Chandler's crime scene, along with matching samples from different cases.
Vincent's ex fiancée, Alex Salter, is another obstacle. His past and the people of his past life do not realize that he is alive and in hiding.
